Capturing round-the-clock construction on the Sydney rail network, multiple time-lapse camera systems documented the installation of prefabricated railway bridge girders over the M2 Freeway. Repositioned across different strategic viewpoints, the cameras recorded the intensive structural work over two days and nights as part of the Epping to Thornleigh Third Track project.

Recording the M2 girder installation day and night

The Epping to Thornleigh Third Track (ETTT) project in Sydney included the construction of a major new rail bridge crossing the M2 Motorway and Devlins Creek near Beecroft and Cheltenham. The ETTT Alliance is a joint venture between Transport for NSW, CPB Contractors, Leighton Contractors, Abigroup and Lend Lease.

The weekend installation was filmed with four portable time-lapse cameras rotated to capture key stages of the girder placement. The new bridge features a 7-span, post-tensioned concrete box-girder structure measuring approximately 203.8 meters in length, constructed adjacent to the existing rail alignment.

The construction of the overpass bridge and girder installation at Beecroft in Sydney was a critical element of the Epping to Thornleigh Third Track (ETTT) project to accommodate the alignment of the new third western track. Essential structural work was carried out on the Chapman Avenue Overbridge, and the main bridge span was pre-assembled offsite to minimize live rail corridor disruptions. It was hoisted into place over the rail lines during a single overnight weekend rail possession shift. The complex overnight lift and structural integration were successfully captured using short-term time-lapse cameras.
