Sydney Airport Christmas Sand Sculpture Time-Lapse 

A dedicated time-lapse camera documented the creative construction of a Christmas sand sculpture at Sydney Airport. This short-term time-lapse shows the intricate artwork taking shape for arriving international passengers.

A 30-ton block of sand was sculpted into an interactive holiday display featuring a sandy Santa theme over a week at the Sydney Airport arrival courtyard.

To keep the work visible as the sculpture developed, a dedicated time-lapse camera was securely mounted high on an opposite light pole, safely out of the way of busy pedestrians. The finished film was supplied to the advertising agency Banter.

No. Our outdoor setups utilise custom-built solar systems, while battery-powered cameras are used for interior filming. This means camera positions never need to be tethered to a power outlet.

How are camera positions chosen for art installations?

Camera positions are chosen to show the making or installation of the artwork without obstructing the artist or the public. The Antonia Mrljak studio film used a non-destructive wall mount opposite the artwork. The Sydney Airport sand sculpture film used a camera mounted high on an opposite light pole.
